GREEN MANUFACTURING TO BE KEY FOCUS OF SDS 2020

Surface Design Show 2020

Celebrating 15 years of bringing the best in innovative surface design, manufacturing and development to the UK, the Surface Design Show will return to London’s Business Design Centre from 11th-13th February 2020.

The show is a must-visit for architects, designers and specifiers looking for material inspiration from the UK and around the world. Over 180 exhibitors will be showcasing the latest in pioneering surfaces, some of which will be premiered at the show.

The theme for this year’s event, ‘Close to Home’, will look beyond aesthetics and into manufacturers’ impact on the environment, from the processes used in mining or manufacture, through to the carbon footprint sustained during sales and distribution. Designing with a conscience will also be examined, from reusing waste materials to looking at what happens at the end of a product’s life-cycle.

Visitors can also enjoy a packed programme of talks; approximately 30 presentations from 50 speakers will take place across the purpose-built stages. Other highlights include the ever-popular Opening Night Debate, supported this year by the RIBA; and the lively PechaKucha evening, which will be hosted by Chris Dyson of Chris Dyson Architects.

Following on from its successful introduction last year, Surface Design Show’s New Talent section will be expanding for the 2020 edition. New Talent supports emerging creatives, specialising in producing interior and exterior surface materials and lighting design.

Renowned practices, including Steven Holl Architects, Mikhail Riches, AECOM, WilkinsonEyre and Chris Dyson Architects are among those shortlisted for 2020 Surface Design Awards, which exemplify creative use of surface materials and lighting. There are an impressive 39 projects across 14 categories in total, from retail and public buildings to commercial projects and housing, including new categories in public realm and affordable housing for 2020. Such was the quality of entries submitted, that some projects won nominations across several categories. The winners will be revealed during a breakfast reception on 13th February at Surface Design Show.

For all things innovative in surfaces and materials, Surface Design Show provides the perfect platform for architects, designers and specifiers to explore.

Tickets are free to professional and trade visitors.
