SUCCESS FOR UK TILING APPRENTICE AT WORLDSKILLS FINALS
The tiling young apprentice supported by RUBI UK achieved great success at the 2019 WorldSkills finals in Kazan, coming away with a Medallion of Excellence and world-class recognition.
Mark Scott completed the WorldSkills finals in Kazan where he was ranked 7th in the world and achieved the ‘World-class standard’ in Wall and Floor Tiling, for which he received a Medallion of Excellence.
This medal can only be awarded to those that reach the skill-specific benchmark set by WorldSkills. On this occasion, only nine reached this benchmark in the Wall and Floor Tiling Competition.
The 22-year-old apprentice tiler from Shotts, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, trains at City of Glasgow College and works for J McGoldrick and Sons. Mark had already finished 7th out of 13 at EuroSkills Budapest 2018, and was ahead of some of the most highly-regarded European countries in the Wall and Floor Tiling category.
Team UK won a total of 19 medals - 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal and 15 medallions of excellence.
The event, which was held from 22nd-27th August, is considered to be the ultimate litmus test to compare countries’ readiness to compete economically.
More than a quarter of a million people gathered in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, for the spectacular closing ceremony which was addressed by President Vladimir Putin.
The WorldSkills Opening and Closing Ceremonies were televised in the UK for the very first time.
Dr Neil Bentley-Gockmann OBE, CEO of WorldSkills UK, said: “This is a fantastic result for the team and the UK as a whole – I couldn’t be prouder.
“The members of Team UK, all under 25, championed the UK focus on skills development in front of a global audience, sending a strong message that the UK is a world-class place to invest, do business and create jobs.
“Governments, education and industry need to continue to work with us to help make sure the UK stays at the cutting edge of global best practice in skills development.
“We are extremely grateful for the support of RUBI Tools, who provided Mark with the tools and equipment needed to train and compete at WorldSkills Kazan 2019.”
